Science by Massachusetts General. Technology by CoolSculpting.
The science behind the CoolSculpting Procedure, called Cryolipolysis™, was developed by world-renowned dermatologists at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Their research showed that fat cells are naturally more vulnerable to the effects of cooling than other surrounding tissues, and that fat cells can be safely eliminated without harming the skin. This discovery led to the development of the non-invasive CoolSculpting Procedure.

Is the CoolSculpting Procedure right for you?
Ideal candidates for the CoolSculpting Procedure are relatively fit (BMI <30), but have some modest-size fat bulges that are not easily reduced through diet and exercise. If you are seeking spot reduction for specific areas of fat, but are not considering a surgical procedure, the CoolSculpting Procedure may be right for you. It is not a way to lose weight or treat obesity, and it is not a substitute for invasive methods like liposuction. The areas that can be treated have to be "pinchable" to be able to fit within the CoolSculpting handpiece. Clinical studies involving hundreds of patients show that, for properly selected patients, the CoolSculpting Procedure is an effective way to reduce fat without the pain, risk, and recovery time of surgical procedures. The result is noticeable, natural-looking fat reduction in the treated areas. Provided by physicians. The procedure is performed in a medical office, under the supervision of a physician specializing in cosmetic procedures.

How does the CoolSculpting Procedure work?
During the procedure, a non-invasive applicator with suction delivers precisely controlled cooling to target and eliminate fat cells in specific areas of your body. When the fat cells are exposed to cooling during the Coolsculpting Procedure, it triggers a process of natural removal, which gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. The result is a reduction in fat bulges that is visible in most patients in two to four months.

What happens to the fat cells?
The exposure to cooling causes the fat cells to begin a process of natural removal, which gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. The fat cells in the treated area are gently eliminated through the body’s normal metabolic processes, similar to how fat from food is eliminated. Studies during the trials have shown no increase in lipid or cholesterol levels after this procedure.

What are common post-procedure effects?
The CoolSculpting Procedure is completely non-invasive, which allows immediate return to normal activities such as work or exercise. Redness may appear in the treated area, and may last from a few minutes to a few hours. Some localized bruising may occur, which clears within a few weeks. Many patients experience a temporary dulling of sensation in the treated area lasting one to eight weeks.

Does the CoolSculpting Procedure hurt?
The CoolSculpting Procedure is comfortable for most patients. No anesthesia and/or pain medication was needed during treatment in any patients in clinical trials. Typically patients are comfortable enough to read, work on their laptop computers, listen to music on headphones, or simply relax during the procedure. Using the new Cooladvantage handpieces, the procedure has been shown to be even more comfortable.

How long does the procedure take?
Procedure time are now significantly less than they used to be. What used to take 2 hours (2 applications), can now be done in 35 minutes. The CoolAdvantage handpieces cut the time of a cycle from 1 hour to 35 minutes (sometimes 45 minutes) and the DualSculpting allows for 2 areas to be treated simultaneously.

Is there downtime after the procedure?
There is no recovery time after the procedure. You may resume your normal activities on the same day as your procedure, including work and exercise. There is occasional bruising and soreness which can last about a week. There is a rare circumstance where patients will have nerve pain which can take up to 3 weeks to resolve. Usually this is controlled with topical lidocaine patches.

How long until I notice results?
In properly selected patients, the CoolSculpting Procedure results in a noticeable, measurable reduction in fat bulges in two to four months. At that time, you and your doctor can meet to assess your cosmetic improvement and consider additional procedures to achieve greater fat reduction. With the new CoolAdvantage handpieces, the results are seen earlier, as soon as 3 weeks there will be some noticeable changes.

What areas are currently treatable with CoolSculpting?
The Aesthetic Clinique has all the available handpieces. This includes all the CoolAdvantage handpieces, the Cool Mini, and the Cool Petite. Treatable areas are:

  • Abdomen or belly fat
  • Flanks or "love handles"
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Banana roll
  • Submental or chin fat
  • Underarm fat
  • Bra fat
  • Back fat
  • Knee fat

How do the results compare with invasive procedures like liposuction?
The results of the CoolSculpting Procedure are not as rapid or dramatic as invasive procedures such as liposuction. However, if you want to avoid the pain, risk, and recovery time associated with surgical procedures, the CoolSculpting Procedure may be the preferred option for you. With multiple treatments, some patients can achieve close to liposuction results.

How many treatments will I need to see results?
Two to four months after your initial procedure, you and your doctor can meet to assess your cosmetic improvement and consider additional CoolSculpting Procedures to achieve greater fat reduction. During the initial assessment, number of cycles can be estimated to achieve your desired goals.

How long do the results last?
The elimination of fat cells as a result of the CoolSculpting Procedure is expected to last about as long as fat cells removed by invasive procedures such as liposuction. Once the fat cell is removed from the body, it won't be replaced. However, the remaining fat cells can get bigger if proper exercise and diet are not adhered to.

Can CoolSculpting be used on patients who have already had liposuction?
At The Aesthetic Clinique, we are treating several clients who have had liposution previously but want more fat removed or desire smoother contours. Because the CoolSculpting uniformly treats areas, you can smooth out irregularities from prior liposuction. We are finding this is one of the most common issues we treat.

What clinical evidence shows that the CoolSculpting Procedure really works?
There are numerous clinical studies involving hundreds of patients showing that, for properly selected patients, the CoolSculpting Procedure is an effective way to reduce fat without pain, risk, and recovery time of surgical procedures. The result is noticeable, natural-looking fat reduction in the treated areas.
